Great Bands You Might Never Hear About

In honor of a thing I randomly did last year (10 genre-defining albums of 2010) I am going to share a bit more of my eclectic taste in music.

Only this time we're focusing on groups that don't typically receive a lot of radio play, a lot of advertisement, things like that. Bands that can easily slip under the radar, so to speak. I'll include what I find to be a style defining track, so you can make your own judgements.

Without further adieu...

  • Celldweller
    • Genre: Industrial and/or Electronic Rock
    • Appeals to: Anyone who enjoys heavy music. Equal appeal to hard rockers and metalheads, with a bit of techno frosting. Dabbles in every possible element of musical style, composes like a perfectionist.
    • Where you might have heard his stuff: Oddly enough, movie soundtracks, video game soundtracks, etc. He's good at licensing.
    • Track(s) to check out: Own Little World, BT - Suddenly (Celldweller remix), The Best It's Gonna Get
  • Hana Pestle
    • Genre: Soft Rock and/or Acoustic
    • Appeals to: Fans of artists like Adele, Norah Jones, Anna Nalick, etc. Essentially soft, but typically dark, music that is written in a very stream-of-consciousness style of composition. Something like what you might expect sitting around a campfire with a guitar, but she doesn't tend to pick the brightest material - which is part of the appeal.
    • Where you might have heard her stuff: Good question. I think a song got licensed to Twilight, maybe. Not that the movie reflects on the artist at all.
    • Track(s) to check out: Let Me Be, For the Sky, Need
  •  BT (Brian Transeau)
    • Genre: Techno
    • Appeals to: People who enjoy broad ranged experimentation with techno sounds. Think along the lines of DJs, maybe.
    • Where you might have heard his stuff: The most famous techno artist you've never heard of. He's influenced quite a bit of music, to be frank.
    • Track(s) to check out: Somnambulist (Simply Being Loved), Break My Fall (ft. Tiesto), Forget Me
  • Nickel Creek
    • Genre: Progressive Acoustic
    • Appeals to: People who like soft, but still complex, music. It's the dirty secret, the set of sounds that you like from country...only without the melodrama.
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: No idea. They don't get much exposure at all.
    • Track(s) to check out: This Side, Shoulda Known Better, Beauty and the Mess
  •  12 Stones
    • Genre: Rock and/or Alt. Rock
    • Appeals to: See Genre
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: Singer was featured in Evanescence's Bring Me To Life (He's the one who isn't a girl.)
    • Track(s) to check out: This Dark Day
  •  Anna Nalick
    • Genre: Acoustic Rock
    • Appeals to: If you like Hana Pestle, you'll like her. Same style, different voice.
    • Where you might have heard her stuff: Lots of tv shows abuse her songs in soundtracks.
    • Track(s) to check out: Wreck of the Day, Catalyst, Shine
  •  Anna Phoebe
    • Genre: Alt. Rock
    • Appeals to: Frankly, anyone who enjoys violin but wants it to have a harder edge.
    • Where you might have heard her stuff: Well, she is a lead violinist for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Aside from that you've never heard her solo work.
    • Track(s) to check out: Gypsy, 99 Lives, Rise of the Warrior, Nemesis (if you can even find them)
  •  Dredg
    • Genre: Alt. Rock (very, very alt.)
    • Appeals to: People who enjoy a rock sound with a lot of exploration of other elements of the music. Frankly, they're kinda weird.
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: I'm betting you haven't.
    • Track(s) to check out: Sang Real, Down Without a Fight, Of the Room
  •  Decyfer Down
    • Genre: Alt. Rock. Possibly Christian Rock. Not sure.
    • Appeals to: See Genre
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: Random internet videos, maybe.
    • Track(s) to check out: Crash, Best I Can, Forever With You
  •  Egypt Central
    • Genre: Alt Rock
    • Appeals to: People who like alt. rock, and perhaps enjoy indie music a bit.
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: They get a mild amount of radio play.
    • Track(s) to check out: White Rabbit, The Drug (Part One), Different, Over and Under
  • Aerias
    • Genre: Rock
    • Appeals to: See genre
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: Nowhere. Don't even think they have a label yet.
    • Track(s) to check out: Tearing Me Down
  • Trivium
    • Genre: Metal
    • Appeals to: See genre. Also, they are much better than your average "omg hardcore" metal band.
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: Good question. Some radio play, I believe.
    • Track(s) to check out: Ascendancy, In Waves, Built to Fall, Caustic Are the Ties that Bind, Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr
  • Automatic Loveletter
    • Genre: Alt/Emo Rock
    • Appeals to: See genre. Interesting voice...
    • Where you might have heard their stuff: Wouldn't know, don't generally enjoy this style.
    • Track(s) to check out: Hush, The Answer, Unhearted
  • Ben Moody
    • Genre: Alt. Rock
    • Appeals to: See Genre.
    • Where you might have heard his stuff: Well, he was one of the primary creative members of Evanescence before they split and drama happened. Think of "Fallen."
    • Track(s) to check out: Sanctuary, 10.22, Everything Burns
  • Honorable mentions (either you're likely to have heard of them already, or the music is a bit further out there.): Dream Theater,  Symphony X, Blind Guardian, Andromeda, Liquid Tension Experiment, Ayreon, Black Mages, We Are the Fallen, Bond/Elis/Escala, Fair to Midland, Green Carnation, In This Moment, Infected Mushroom, James LaBrie, Kerli, Lansdowne, Lynam, Noctura
Yeah...frankly, that's enough for one post. Expect more, eventually.
